Menopause
Menopause means “change of life” and it is the transitional change that occurs when a woman’s menstrual function ceases.
Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 50, as a result of failure of oestrogen and progesterone production by the ovaries.
The symptoms are hot flushes, sweats, itching, vaginal dryness, skin problems, aches and pains, possible weight gain and mental problems such as: tearfulness, depression, lack of concentration, loss of self-esteem and lowered libido.
In some cultures, such as in Japan, women rarely suffer from menopausal symptoms. This is thought to be due to their diet which is high in phyto-oestrogens (plant oestrogens) provided by foodstuffs such as soya beans and tofu. This blocks the action of synthetic oestrogens and boosts natural oestrogen levels enabling women to make the transition much more smoothly.
Tip: diet provides a rich source of solutions for dealing with symptoms of the Menopause eg. foods rich in phyto-oestrogens, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamins B6,D, and E, Phosphorus, and essential fatty acids – as well as taking appropriate supplements.
