Infertility
Infertility is the inability to conceive after a year or more of sexual intercourse without contraception. It is a problem that is thought to affect at least one in eight couples.
Usually there is a specific problem with either the man or the woman. Sometimes both partners are infertile, and in 10% of cases no obvious reason is found.
In women Infertility can be caused by a number of factors such as ill health, hormonal imbalance, stress, blocked or scarred fallopian tubes, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, acidic cervical mucus, poor nutrition, psychological factors and genetic causes. There may be other rarer causes such as exposure to environmental chemicals. A specialist will determine the cause, and the best way to proceed if pregnancy is potentially possible.
In men Infertility is usually due to a low sperm count, and this can be caused by infection, overheated or undescended testes, hormonal imbalances, smoking or certain drugs.
Infertility treatment includes surgery to clear blocked fallopian tubes, drugs to stimulate ovulation, or various kinds of in vitro fertilisation as a last resort.
