Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is also known as spastic or irritable colon. It is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints, affecting one in ten people.
It is characterised by abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, cramps, abdominal distension, excessive wind, lethargy. IBS appears to be brought on and exacerbated by anxiety, stress, and nervous problems.
Symptoms often appear worse during menstruation, and indeed IBS seems to be more common in women. Other causal factors include food intolerance, a diet that is too high in refined carbohydrates, caffeine and sugar, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Tip: the best way of controlling the condition is by reducing stress through stress management techniques, such as relaxation, autogenic training and breathing techniques.
