Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye, normally transparent, becomes progressively opaque. This leads to a gradual and painless loss of vision.

Cataracts may form as a normal part of the ageing process, but they may also be caused by eye disease, injury, steroid use, metabolic or congenital problems, radiation or poisoning.

Normally the cataract can be removed alongside the old lens in a simple operation, and replaced with an artificial lens. This is a common and very safe procedure.

Tip: nutritionists believe that taking the antioxidants Vitamins A,C, and E can prevent free-radicals from damaging the protein in the lens and thus prevent the formation of Cataracts.
